The DeTour Botanical Gardens
Countless hours of tender care go into this beautiful oasis of gardens. Volunteers start working on Thursday Mornings and continue into the evening with shovels, rakes, buckets, nippers, and wheelbarrows. Smiling faces and willing hands are ready to dig in for whatever the project may be for the day. You can hear happy voices as we week, plant or simply move mulch.
DeTour Botanical Gardens Open to the Public
A true source of community pride - these gardens are open to the public and provide a rare solitary gem contained in a semi-wilderness setting. Summer gardens are filled with annuals and perennials with the rose gardens holding 30 different varieties! Located just south of town on H34.
DeTour Historical Photo of the Reff Light DeTour Reef Light
DeTour Village marks the southern entrance to DeTour Passage and the St. Mary's River, the connecting route between Lake Huraon and Lake Superior. There has been a light at DeTour, located on the mainland, since 1848. It was rebuilt in 1861 with the same design as the Manitou Island Light and Whitefish Point light on Lake Superior. Since then, the light has been refitted several times, in the early 1900's,
the Lighthouse Board proposed to make the DeTour light more distinctive and recognizable, by installing a new Fresnel lens that would produce a fixed light varied by a flash which was installed in 1908. The lens, along with the lantern room in which it was placed, are the only parts of the onshore light station that were retained when the present structure was built in 1931. The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society has begun a restoration project on the offshore lighthouse, which is now one mile offshore.
